Inner Work

For the week of: September 1, 2003

Earning Our Freedom

Inner freedom means liberation from egoism, both the individual ego and the group ego. This freedom, this relinquishing of the burden of self-centered views, this fresh air cannot be given to us. If we are to come to inner freedom, we must earn it. To be able to step outside our myriad attachments and identifications requires a long-term commitment to the spiritual path. Like frequent flyer miles, every effort of presence, kindness, and letting go accrues to our account. As our soul grows more coherent and stable, we move toward that ultimate liberation, toward a direct, "conscious" relationship with the Divine. But these personal efforts cannot be avoided. Even the grace of God cannot liberate us before our soul is properly prepared.

For this week, notice the extent of your spiritual efforts. Half-heartedness will not achieve the goal.
