In Contact

Do you ever misplace a material object: cannot find your keys or your glasses? Do you ever forget the name of someone to whom you were just introduced? What did you have for dinner a week ago? These and other memory lapses do not necessarily indicate a problem with our brain, but rather a lack of awareness. The more alert, aware, and attentive we are during an experience, the better we remember it. Since we spend the vast majority of our time on autopilot, we remember very little. So interrogating your memory, or lack thereof, can show you your level of awareness. Life on autopilot remains very thin.

The true way to enrich our life consists of being in full contact with each moment. The more we notice, the more we live. This contact can extend to our whole presence, all our thoughts, emotions, and all our ordinary sensory experience. Our whole life grows vivid in the light of awareness.

For this week, practice being in contact with your life, inner and outer, moment to moment. Choose a block of time each day, during which you will practice contact with your ordinary activities.
