Inner Work For the week of: January 26, 2004
Reaching Beyond Behind and hidden by our ordinary five senses, behind our thoughts and emotions, behind our mental images, lies the domain of consciousness: still, empty, and peaceful. Behind consciousness we begin to approach the foothills of the Divine. For this we need to reach beyond the space-like inner realm of consciousness. The question is how. We have enough difficulty simply recognizing the conscious context of experience. Beyond that, we cannot conceive. Yet we make the attempt, repeatedly. What attempt? The classical, yet timeless, way of prayer beckons. We find many forms of prayer in the world's religions, yet its essence continues to elude us, unless we experiment to find an effective inner attitude, an appropriate inner posture toward the Divine. The heartfelt words of prayer serve as links in a chain reaching toward Heaven. With our will, we reach beyond ourselves in search of and in submission to the Great Will. Turning toward our innermost inwardness, we seek the Divine beyond inner and outer. Gradually something begins to flow back toward us: an energy, certainty, love, and light. These out flowing markers hint at the rightness of our endeavors and point the way. And then we continue our search, hoping to be found.
