Hidden Treasure

Treasure hunters use every clue they can find to guide them toward their goal. Maps, the last known whereabouts of the treasure-laden vessel, and the testimony of witnesses together form a puzzle that the treasure seeker attempts to decipher. Some maps and testimonies may be reliable, while others offer only partial truths or even whole-cloth fabrications.

Our spiritual pursuit also has it maps and witnesses. The great religions and paths each include maps, simple and elaborate, of the spiritual realms. Saints and seers throughout the ages leave behind descriptions, direct and allegorical, of the sacred landscape. Nevertheless, we experience great difficulty attempting to decipher all this guidance, because it speaks in terms so alien to our everyday reality. One fact shines through clearly, though: the spiritual treasure exists and can be found by human beings.

Like the seeker of buried treasure, the spiritual seeker must work with diligence and perseverance, with intelligence and determination, through all kinds of inner and outer weather. Yet the goal of liberation and love, the sacred and Divine, draws us forward, to the extent that we can keep our sights fixed on it.

For this week, remember the spiritual treasure more often. Let the reality of it, though unseen, touch your heart and enliven your practice.
