Islands:
Separation and Longing
Experiences, perhaps “accidental,” of a deeper state, and intimations
that the spiritual realm actually exists, draw us forward. We see our usual mode
of living and recognize its greatest shortcoming: our chronic separation from
what matters most, from each other and from the Divine. We live as islands in a
sea of roiling waters. At the surface our isolation appears insurmountable. Yet
we need only learn to look toward the depths to realize that our own little
island actually connects with all the other islands. Our separation is an
illusion, since we actually arise from the same source.
An important aspect of the path consists in not closing our eyes to the
fact of separation, to see full-sober how we remain cut off from what matters
most. To feel this separation, in its full impact, naturally arouses our
longing, even our determination to find our way to the Real, to do what’s
possible toward that in this and every moment.
For this week, notice the island-like qualities of your personal world.
