Just Breathing

            At every moment, as long as we live, our breath continues its in and out rhythms. The perpetual cycle of breathing invites us into the present. As presence is the basic food of our spiritual practice, the breath offers a simple inner sustenance in addition to its physical sustenance. The continual movement of the breath supports continuous attention to it.

            For this week, we bring our attention to our breath, without changing the breath in any way. Allowing the physical breath to follow its natural course, we simply open our awareness to our breathing. In quiet moments, the breath may fill our entire awareness. We become the breath. Letting the breath breathe itself, our egocentric stance may vanish momentarily. The whole of us simplifies into just breathing.
